In laparoscopic surgery, the word “access” is used for many different devices: trocars, wound retractors, single-port platforms, robotic ports, hand ports, sealing caps, and specimen extraction pathways. For procurement teams and distributors, this creates a practical problem: two products may look related because they both help maintain a sealed working space, but their clinical purpose and product architecture can be completely different.
This is especially true for hand ports and sealing caps. Both may be discussed together with wound retractors or wound protectors. Both may be used in procedures where pneumoperitoneum matters. Both may appear in the broader category of laparoscopic access consumables. But they are not the same product.
A hand port is used when the surgeon’s hand or forearm needs to enter the abdomen. A sealing cap is used when a compatible wound retractor / protector needs to be closed into a sealed single-channel access pathway.
What is a hand port?
A hand port is a hand-assisted laparoscopic access device. It allows the surgeon’s hand or forearm to enter the abdominal cavity through a sealed access route while helping support the CO₂ working space required for laparoscopic visualization.
This type of device is used in hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery, often called HALS. In HALS, the surgeon may need the advantages of laparoscopy while also using direct manual assistance. The hand may support tissue handling, exposure, tactile feedback, organ positioning, specimen extraction, or control during selected complex steps.
For AeroMed Surgical, the hand-assisted product is HK-FDDC-1XF Hand-Assisted Access System. Its product architecture should be explained as: wound retractor / protector + hand port + rotating upper sealing platform.
The rotating upper platform is important because the product is not simply a cap placed on top of a wound retractor. It is designed for manual access. The surgeon’s hand or forearm enters through the hand port, and the upper sealing structure closes around the forearm according to IFU and hospital protocol.
What is a sealing cap?
A sealing cap is a cap used with a compatible wound retractor / protector to create a sealed access pathway. In AeroMed’s product structure, the HK-TS Series Sealing Cap is a single-channel sealing cap.
The most important word is single-channel. A sealing cap is not designed for the surgeon’s hand to enter the abdomen. It is also not a multi-channel single-port platform. It is used to close a compatible wound retractor / protector and create a simple sealed channel for selected laparoscopic access workflows.
The product logic is: HK-FQ wound retractor / protector + HK-TS single-channel sealing cap.
For distributors, this is the cleanest way to explain it: the sealing cap turns a compatible wound retractor / protector into a sealed single-channel access configuration.
Hand Port vs Sealing Cap: the practical difference
| Question | Hand Port | Sealing Cap |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Sealed manual hand / forearm access | Sealed single-channel access pathway |
| Typical workflow | HALS / hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery | Selected laparoscopic access with compatible wound retractor |
| Human hand enters? | Yes | No |
| Multi-channel instrument platform? | No | No |
| Base component | Wound retractor / protector | Compatible wound retractor / protector |
| AeroMed example | HK-FDDC-1XF | HK-TS Series |
Where the wound retractor / protector fits
The reason these products are often confused is that both may connect back to the wound retractor / protector. In many laparoscopic access configurations, the wound retractor / protector acts as the base sleeve. It supports the incision pathway and provides the physical structure on which another access component can be assembled.
That upper component may be different depending on the workflow:
- A hand port for HALS
- A sealing cap for a single-channel sealed access pathway
- A single-port platform for multi-channel instrument access
- A route-specific platform for vNOTES or TaTME
- A robotic access platform for selected robotic workflows
Once distributors understand this architecture, quotation becomes much easier. Instead of asking “Do you need a single-port system?”, the better question is: what type of access does the surgeon need?
What is a single-port platform?
A single-port platform is another access configuration. It should not be confused with either a hand port or a sealing cap. A standard single-port platform usually provides sealed working channels for laparoscopic instruments through one access site. Depending on model design, it may have multiple sleeves, channels, caps, or valves.
The purpose is instrument access, not manual hand entry. This means:
- If the surgeon needs to insert a hand: discuss Hand Port / HK-FDDC-1XF.
- If the hospital needs a simple sealed cap with a wound retractor: discuss Sealing Cap / HK-TS.
- If the procedure requires multiple instruments through one incision: discuss Single-Port Platform.
- If the workflow is vNOTES or TaTME: discuss route-specific access configuration.
- If the workflow involves SHURUI or da Vinci Xi Single-Site context: discuss Robotic Single-Port Platform.

Documentation to request before quotation
Because these devices are configuration-based, quotation should not start from a single word such as “hand port” or “cap.” It should start from the procedure and the intended access configuration.
- Target country / registration market
- Procedure type or clinical department
- Intended access route
- Required product family
- Exact model or size preference
- Compatible wound retractor / protector size
- Sample requirement and expected quantity
- Catalog page, model matrix, IFU, labeling, and packaging information
- CE documentation according to current certificate and model scope
- Quotation terms, lead time, and shipping destination
Safe public wording is: CE documentation available according to current certificate and model scope. Exact claims should always be checked against the current certificate, IFU, label, and model list.
What this article is not claiming
This article is not clinical guidance. Device selection depends on IFU, labeling, surgeon judgment, patient condition, hospital protocol, and regulatory review.
This article does not claim that a hand port or sealing cap improves outcomes, reduces complications, prevents infection, or guarantees pneumoperitoneum. The purpose is to explain product architecture and procurement logic.
This article also does not claim that one access product replaces another. A hand port, sealing cap, single-port platform, robotic platform, and wound retractor / protector solve different access problems.
